Anarchy

The word ‘anarchy’ comes from the ancient Greek ἄναρχος in which ἄν meant ‘without’ and αρχος meant first a military ‘leader’ and then ‘ruler’. So an anarchist society is one ‘without rulers’: a classless, non-hierarchical society. The history of attempts to create such a society in the modern era is the history of anarchism.
