NB. ‘A practical guide to anarchist organisation’ is adapted from a text written a few years ago by a member of the Irish group Workers Solidarity Movement.
For absolute beginners and isolated individuals (or groups of 2 or 3)…
1) Introductory note
A common experience, particularly for young people who come to anarchism from the English-speaking world, is one of isolation. In my own case I came to anarchism through reading Homage to Catalonia and then the (very few) anarchist books I could obtain in my city. These were nearly all liberal academic histories or reprints of texts from the nineteenthth century, so for quite a while I was completely unaware that a contemporary anarchist movement even existed. It took me a year to find other individual anarchists, and a further year to discover there was actually a small anarchist group in my city. Another year passed before I took part in the formation of an organisation, but as we were very inexperienced, we ended up joining with a much older anarchist group. It was only then that we became able to undertake effective activity. I’ve written this text (with the help of others) in a way that I think would have enabled me and our initial small group to become effective much, much faster.
